TYPES OF CARGO PLANE IN AIR TRANSPORT
1.Types of cargo aircraft in air transport
There are 3 types of air cargo service aircraft, including:
- Passenger Aircraft/ Passenger flight (PAX): aircraft that can carry both passengers and cargo
- Freighter (F)/Cargo Aircraft Only (CAO): cargo aircraft
- Air cargo charter (charter): Charter flight
1.1 Passenger Aircraft/ Passenger flight (PAX): aircraft that can carry both passengers and cargo
This is a type of aircraft that can carry both cargo and passengers during transportation. The cargo will be placed in the lower deck compartment, also known as the belly (belly/lower) and the remaining area will be used to transport passengers. For this type of aircraft, airlines often have very strict regulations on the maximum size and weight per piece of any shipment with a confirmed reservation.
Airlines often take advantage of the space in passenger flights to transport commercial cargo. This helps optimize resource use and increase revenue from flights. Cargo is packed and loaded in containers, pallets or specialized plastic bags. Then it is arranged in the luggage compartment or auxiliary cargo compartment.
PAX aircraft are often used for flights with the need to quickly transfer goods. Or medium-haul flights with not too large cargo transportation needs. However, due to the limited cargo space compared to cargo aircraft. They often cannot meet the requirements of large-scale cargo transportation.
1.2 Freighter (F)/Cargo Aircraft Only (CAO): cargo aircraft
A type of cargo aircraft will not carry passengers but only crew and cargo. The main deck/upper deck (main deck) and the lower deck of the aircraft are both used to transport cargo.
The advantage of this type of aircraft is that it does not have to share seats with passengers, so the amount of cargo carried will be much larger than that of a regular aircraft.
Cargo aircraft are capable of transporting a wide range of cargo. They can transport everything from parcels, letters, electronics to consumer goods, industrial goods, and even precious and sensitive goods.
Cargo aircraft are typically operated by cargo airlines or logistics companies. They ensure the transport of goods on cargo routes, provide express delivery services, transport goods in global supply chains, and support international trade.
Popular types of cargo aircraft include the Boeing 747 Freighter, Boeing 777F, Airbus A330F, and Airbus A380F. These aircraft are designed to carry cargo in the entire cabin, providing spacious space and high transport efficiency.
1.3 Air cargo charter (charter): Charter flight
The aviation term “Charter Flight” is a flight that is chartered as a whole flight according to the itinerary requested by the lessee. Charter flights can be used to transport passengers or cargo or a combination of both depending on the agreement between the lessor and the lessor.
Charter flights provide absolute flexibility for customers in transporting goods. Customers can adjust the schedule, decide the departure and destination points. As well as decide on the type of aircraft and cargo capacity to suit their requirements.
Charter flights are often used in the following situations
- Large cargo
- Valuable and sensitive goods
- Emergencies and shortages
Some aircraft offer charter flights
